The Known Universe

The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world’s most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History. The new film, created by the Museum, is part of an exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe, at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010. — • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — Data: Digital Universe, American Museum of Natural History www.haydenplanetarium.org Visualization Software: Uniview by SCISS Director: Carter Emmart Curator: Ben R. How do you figure there’s been an anti-science wave and an increase in religious fundamentalism? In fact, the unafiliated group has been growing in the last couple decades.

Chill, dude. He’s talking about the beauty of the universe, life, and humanity. This is the beauty that he sees and there’s no need to assail his conception of it.

AthaeusJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

Considering the anti-science wave that has started hitting due to the increase of religious fundamentalism - my thought is that we will rediscover fire.

AthaeusJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

@fallbread We’re small - but beautiful? What exactly do you consider beautiful about ‘us’ that doesn’t exist everywhere else?

fallbreadJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

Wow that is so cool we are so small but so beautiful it blows my mind

justforflag2January 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

If the god of the Bible were real, what would be the point of having all those other solar systems and galaxies?

7horcrux7January 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

Yes a higher power indeed, only we cannot call it god for that word is so polluted it would be an insult to the very nature of our creator. The bible is man made, if it were the word of god why does it lie?The earth was not built in 7 days, man and land animals could not have been made on the same day (dinosaurs predate humanity by millions of years),and one man, one woman of the same race will never breed a child of another race, two blacks don’t make a white. Evolution is the only true answer.

I think they figure at diameter of a minimum of 150+ billion light years, and that just accounts for where the oldest objects we can see would be now, given expansion.

right on man.

MakeNine42January 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

@otaibinm god is a primitive concept invoked to explain what we do not understand.

otaibinmJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

Taking nature and the universe as is, and going from there is really meaningless.. Think about it, it really hints that something greater is overseeing the mechanics of the whole universe.. can someone tells me how life first came about? how did RNA and DNA form? where did the ingredients of life come from?…

otaibinmJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

Oh God!! because disasters happen here and there and HIV gets transmitted to babies, that does not mean that God doesn’t exist! and who told you that god is always loving?! God punishes people for bad deeds.. God set up nature as it’s, it can be harsh, but that’s God’s work. Think about the universe, living organisms, our biological system, our brains, the atom itself! To me, they all hint a higher power that elegantly designed all this..

Wh3tst0nEJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

Not at all, we already know how those things originated. Therefore there is no need to invoke the God answer, lol.

If anything, this is an argument AGAINST your god.

MilletGtrJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

This is so beautiful :D

phookadudeJanuary 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am

mraks3January 31st, 2010 at 1:47 am
